Volvo says the upgraded motor will improve the vehicle’s AWD effectiveness, allowing for improved towing capability and better stability in inclement weather. The 2022 XC60 Recharge is powered by a supercharged and turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with a 143-horsepower rear electric motor for a combined system output of 455 hp, both improvements over the 2021 model’s 87-hp rear motor and 400 hp (415 hp in Polestar Engineered guise).

Charging the SUV’s battery from 5% to a full charge takes between three and four hours with 3.6-kilowatt AC fast charging and six to eight hours with a standard 110-volt connector. Volvo says the XC60 Recharge’s combined EPA-estimated fuel economy is up slightly from 27 to 28 mpg, and its mpg-equivalent climbs from 57 to 63 mpg-e.

The increased all-electric range means the SUVs are more likely to accommodate the number of daily miles average drivers travel, which ranged from 30-40 miles per day as of 2017, according to the Department of Energy.
The XC90 Recharge’s all-electric range is also boosted to 35 miles. According to Volvo, maximum range can be achieved when the vehicle is driven in Pure mode this requires the battery to be sufficiently charged, the vehicle speed to stay below 88 mph and avoiding system limitations like cold temperatures. Thanks to a new long-range battery, the 2022 XC60 Recharge will get an EPA-estimated all-electric range of up to 35 miles. Volvo says all of its 60 and 90 Series models will get the new powertrain, including the S60 and S90 sedans, V60 wagon, and Polestar Engineered variants of the V60 and XC60. Other upgrades include increased power and improved all-wheel-drive capability.
A fix for 2022 is coming: Volvo announced the XC60 Recharge and its larger XC90 Recharge sibling will get significant improvements to their all-electric range thanks to a new battery. The Volvo XC60 Recharge offers quick acceleration, decent space for passengers and cargo, and solid towing capacity for a compact plug-in hybrid SUV, but the 2021 model’s all-electric range of 18 miles left our editors wishing for more.
